PROBLEM ID

Often times, you can tell from the exterior of your chimney if there is a problem on the interior. The following images show you examples of some symptoms that may indicate an unhealthy chimney or flue.

SPALLING

Spalling is a condition where the hard exterior finish of the brick has broken away. This is a sign of moisture problems in your chimney. We can diagnose the cause and offer a remedy.

WHITE STAINS

This condition is known as efflorescence and is the result of minerals leaching out of the masonry and appearing as a white powder-like stain. This is due to a moisture problem possibly caused by a missing or defective liner or exterior water penetration.

LOOSE BRICK

This chimney is over 100 years old and has never had a liner. Over the years, the heat and moisture generated from use has eaten away the mortar.

MISSING MORTAR

This condition can be the result of several factors such as poor original construction, cracked brick, mortar joints or a broken crown. This poses a hazard as bricks can come loose in storms causing extensive damage.
